ABSTRACT
Ken Ingham, Ph.D. will describe the architecture and motivation behind the
development of Amazability, Inc.’s Adept1 product. The Adept1 performs
natural language analysis and interprets spoken words and phrases or typed
input. It accepts and interprets verbal commands and responds with high
quality speech. The Adept1 is equipped with voice recognition and
text-to-speech output that dynamically adapts multilingual spoken output to
context. The Adept1 offers such applications as word processing, email,
address book, web browsing, and access to an online library of thousands of
books. These applications along with others have been developed from the
ground up to work with speech and have a common command language throughout.
They can be employed using ordinary speech or typed words and sentences.
Thus the product represents a foundation for implementing practical natural
language transaction processing where simple English phrases and sentences
are interpreted to command a sequence of complex operations. While the
Company’s founders are offering a vehicle that can be used as a full
programmer’s workstation, the operating system is hidden with all
applications designed to be used by person’s with minimal or no technical
background. The Adept1 will be demonstrated and a roadmap for future
applications will be given.
This talk will be taped.
Speaker: Ken Ingham, Ph.D.

ABSTRACT
Does Web 2.0 represent a triumph of the wisdom of crowds, or the tyranny of mediocrity? The truth–as truths often do–may fall somewhere in the middle. New tools have indeed allowed access to new ideas, voices, and expertise. But at the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. In education, the shift from "the sage on the stage" to the "guide on the side" has been underway for quite some time. The same shift is happening on the web. Experts aren’t disappearing, but their roles are changing. How can tools and infrastructure best support this shift in the role of expertise and authority?
Speaker: Elizabeth Lane Lawley
Elizabeth Lane Lawley is the director of the Lab for Social Computing at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is also an ociate professor of Information Technology. Her current teaching and research interests focus on social computing technologies such as weblogs, wikis, online games, lightweight online presence, and collaborative information retrieval.
Before she became a technology professor, Liz was a librarian–with an MLS from the University of Michigan, and a PhD in Library and Information Science from the University of Alabama. She has worked for publishing companies, software companies, and even the Library of Congre…

He completed a diploma in Arabic language and a B.A. degree in 1979 from the College of Islamic Disciplines at the Islamic University of Madinah, an Islamic university in Saudi Arabia. At the University of Riyadh College of Education he completed his M.A. in Islamic Theology in 1985, and in 1994 he completed his Ph.D in Islamic Theology in the department of Islamic studies at the University of Wales. He later taught Islamic education and Arabic language in private schools in Riyadh for over ten years. Because of his opposition to Saudi Arabia’s position in the Gulf War, he had to leave the country and for three years he lectured M.Ed. students in the Islamic Studies department of Shariff Kabunsuan Islamic University in Cotobato City, Mindanao, the Philippines.

ABSTRACT
For six years, I have worked on learning quality predictors from NASA data. Based on that experimence, this talk offers the following lessons from the trenches:
1) Real world data collection is more like ambulance chasing that bus driving. The old DoD model of rigorous process control just breaks down in the modern era of distributed software development. Rather than lament lack of formal process, we should adapt our learning methods to handle the idiosyncrasies of our data.
2) Accuracy, correlation and precision and not accurate or precise and may not correlate with any decision making process. This is especially true for data sets where only a small percentage of the data contains the target concept.
3) Static code attributes are a wide and shallow well- easy to get to the bottom, very hard to get much further. Our learners may have learned all they can learn from these attributes.
4) The only way up is sideways. My data miners have struck a performance ceiling and the only way up is to change the performance target.
5) The performance ceiling is very close- we can exploit that. Rather than large-scale automatic methods, it may be more productive to explore human-in-the-loop interactive learning strategies.
6) We can talk, but will they listen? Many times, I have found a clear signal in a software engineering data set. Clearly, our learners are good enough to assist managers in the difficult task of managing software projects. Sadly, all too often, some management edict is applied that effectively ends that project (e.g. collection of that data source is terminated). I offer some speculations on this peculiar effect.

MicrobeWorld Video 14 — HIV/AIDS Education
In this episode of MicrobeWorld Video we ask some leading researchers, education specialists, and public health officials about the state of HIV/AIDS education in America and ideas they have to support the teaching of microbial evolution using the latest HIV/AIDS research — all while instilling innovative prevention strategies.
Filmed at a forum for educators on February, 11, 2008 at the Koshland Science Museum in Washington, D.C. and at San Diego State University, this episode features the following experts:
Roland Wolkowicz, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Biology, San Diego State University, whose research focus is on the use of random peptide libraries and other chemical genetics approaches for the study of viral pathogenesis and the search of antiviral factors in HIV1 and HCV.
Shannon Lee Hader, M.D., MPH, Director of the HIV/AIDS Administration for Washington, D.C., an epidemiologist and public health physician who has worked with HIV-infected children and adults in Brazil, Jamaica, and Zimbabwe.
Anila Asghar, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Education at Johns Hopkins University, whose research focuses on curriculum development and evolution.
